Restoring a Landmark: The University City Beacon

As the sun sets, the silhouette of University City has long been defined by its unique architecture and stunning brick homes. For residents returning home from work or travel, a lit beacon atop our historic City Hall serves as a clear signal of arrival and a landmark for the entire region.

A Connection to Our History

The City Hall building—originally the Women’s Magazine Building—is a cornerstone of our community's identity. Built in 1903, this octagonal monument stands as a reminder of our city’s growth from open farmland to a vibrant urban center. Lighting the beacon isn't just about aesthetics; it’s about honoring that heritage and remembering the dream that made our city a reality.

More Than Just a Light

When the light is on (our aim is 2-3 times per year with the restoration) it acts as a focal point for University City:

It serves as a visual "North Star" for residents returning from neighboring cities and a beacon for the city that symbolizes the vibrant rich heritage and history of our incredible city.

We are asking the City Council to restore the light and establish a schedule to illuminate it for special events and holidays.
